“The whole point is not to be safe… but to take risks in public and when you screw up, you stay happy and they like you!” – Keith Johnstone
“Theatre sports is the best improv training. Period.” – Wayne Brady
What is Theatresports?
Theatresports™ is a short form improv style created by Keith Johnstone. Impro doing “short form,” what?! Yeah! Every single Impro Company members started with extensive (read: YEARS of) training in this short form style.
Theatresports is all about fine-tuning your technique and scene work, and finding the play in improv! AND this style is accessible to and essential for improvisers at all levels of experience.
Two improv teams go head to head, challenging each other in various types of improvised scenes. In the end, the audience and a set of predetermined judges decides who wins.
Theatresports allows improvisers to fearlessly create stories in the moment. And the components of the show (judges, challenges, teams, host, etc.) are there to support and encourage the risk.
In Theatresports shows, audiences will see a variety of scenes ranging from the comedic to the dramatic. This style embraces the stories of life, politics, religion, and love. It expresses opinions and challenges points of view. Theatresports creates an evening of improvised theatre that engages the audience in a way that makes them respond openly – as one might do at a sporting event! – and has everyone thinking and talking about the show afterwards.
LA Theatersports alumni include Wayne Brady, Brad Sherwood, and Mike McShane of “Whose Line is it Anyway.”
Other notable Theatresports alumni outside of Los Angeles include: The Kids in the Hall, Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, and Greg Proops
