Main Company Brian Lohmann

A co-founder of Bay Area Theatresports (BATS), Brian improvised his pants off from 1977-1996 in San Francisco with Natural Acts, San Francisco Times, Faultline, Pulp Playhouse and BATS. His work for L.A.’s Impro Theatre includes directing/performing L.A. Noir UnScripted (Presidio Theatre, Wallis Annenberg Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival), Tennessee Williams UnScripted (Odyssey Theater/South Coast Rep), Dickens UnScripted (Broad Stage/North Coast Rep) and Shakespeare UnScripted (OSF Green Show.) He has also taught improv workshops for Cold Tofu, Room to Improv and directed the musical improv group, Fraudway, for two years. Stage credits include ACT, The Old Globe, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Laguna Playhouse and The Magic Theater. His tortured torch singer persona, Johnny Lonely, sulked through European cabarets with J. Raoul Brody and garnered critical pity-praise in Seattle and Australia. He was active in the Bay Area music scene playing original jazz-funk with Phases, “doo-wa-oodly-cooing,” with Acapella Gold at the Savoy Tivoli and Berkeley Jazz Festival and recreating Bing Crosby Rhythm Boy charts with Scrumbly Koldewyn in The Jesters. Currently, he can be found on writing and singing with John Ballinger for the musical project, Lohmann and Ballinger. He taught improvisation for ACT’s M.F.A program from 1988-1995 and continues to teach Shakespeare and other literary genres online using improvisation. His essay Damned, Smiling Villains, The Pleasure of Not Caring was anthologized in “Playing Shakespeare’s Villains,” Peter Lang Press, edited by Louis Fantasia.
